Understanding Japanese Culture and Customs

​There are many interesting cultural features and customs germain to Japan. Here are some interesting ones to be aware of. In Japan, regardless of the activity, a waitress, a cab driver, there is no tipping. The tip is included in the price. The use of Chopsticks may be required at certain resturants, and they are the primary eating utensils of most Japanese people in Japan. Taking off ones shoes upon entering a dwelling is the norm in Japan, in most homes, or resturants or other buildings, there is a rack near the entrance that one places their shoes. There are even paper slippers near restrooms. Bathing is an interesting experience in Japan, to say the least. Bathing is looked upon as a ritual in Japan, and the body is expected to be clean, and free of all external dirt before one enters a bathtub. Bowing is something that very noticeable with the people of Japan. People there bow, to greet others and or bid farewell. However, most people in Japan are aware that Westerns perform a handshake, so they will extend a handshake to non Japanese people.

Japanese Calligraphy is a very exquisite form of writing that was cultivated in Japan in the 4th century. It is created most often using a specialized quell ink pen. Today Calligraphy is a subject that is mandatory subject for Japanese children in elementary school. Japanese students in High School can take Calligraphy as elective course in art. Many artists of every caliber around the world have inserted Japanese calligraphy into their artwork. Japanese painting, is one of the more vivid and forms of visual art germaine to Japan. Japanese art has been known to interest and influence artists all over the world. Japanese art as we know it now, has dated back to Ancient Japan, and has roots and distinctions that date as far back as the Asuka period. There are many elements of Japanese art, that is beautifully illustrated in many of Japans ancient temples. Many beautiful Japanese paintings of every historical era of Japan's history, are on display in museums in Japan.
