The 2011 Earthquake in Japan

​The "Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster" was one of the worst in history. With a magnitude 9.0, it was one of the most deadly disasters in history. It was the most powerful and destructive earthquake to hit japan. Being measures in the world scale, it is one of the top 5 most powerful earthquakes.

The destruction that this disaster caused was catastrophic. It was Friday, March 11, 2011 at approximately 14:46 JST, that this quake began. The epicenter was approximately 100 miles east of 'Oshika Peninsula of Tohoku.' The earthquake drastically moved earth on it axis between 4 to 10 inches". It moved the city of Honshu 8 ft. from its current placement. It was six minutes of terror, as estimates report this is how long this quake lasted. Sure panic and utter terror surrounded the people of Japan, as they waited to see if they would be a casualty.

It was a originally reported at a 7.9 on the Richter scale, but after reviewing damages it was upgraded to a 9.0. There have been reported around 900 after shocks, since that horrifying day. The aftershocks themselves have had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale.

Due to the destructive earthquake, more tsunami waves that reaches over 133 feet were reported. To make matters worse, the waves triggered nuclear reactions as they slammed against nuclear power plants such as Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant. Anyone within a 50 mile radius was asked to evacuate the area. This was the most disastrous earthquake in history as it cost over $300 billion in cleanup efforts and repairs. Because of the state of the economy, The Bank of Japan even offered to pitch in funds to help with the recovery efforts and to stabilize the economy and the market conditions.

Thousands of lives were lost, especially along the northern islands of Japan's Pacific coast. This earthquake not only had devastating effects on this region, but other regions such as Hawaii live in fear for what devastation might be headed their way. This horrifying day is one that no one will forget, especially those who lived to tell the story of being in such as catastrophic event from mother nature.
